Viminalis - Common Osier comes in 10"-12" cuttings. This Viminalis osier is a vigorous variety which grows tall with unbranched rods of 9-12' each year. The rods are bright green and quite flexible, supporting lots of very narrow leaves on short stems.
It is very useful in living structures and woven hedging projects because the rods are tall, straight, and flexible making it easy to work with. Because of its height it can be a useful windbreak mixed with other varieties or planted in several rows. The rods dry to a medium brown and are suitable for agricultural weaving and for structural work in the garden. It is my favourite for the bean canes each year!
Being tall and sturdy it can be left for 2-3 years and will make excellent short rotation coppice producing very good firewood for woodburning stoves. If you coppice annually than it makes great kindling too!
